Our chalk-based paint stands out because of its excellent cover, firmness after drying and its pleasant lemony scent. Our lime paint has good colour consistency, a velvety finish and is easy to apply. The effect is streaky but not too much so.

When the chalk based paint is diluted with water, it is possible to give wooden surfaces a transparent coating of colour.

Another possibility to protect chalk based paint is wax. This gives a light shine and deepens the colour. It can be applied regularly to an intensively used surface. Arte di Vita wax is available in natural, white and brown. The coloured waxes are mostly used to create an effect on items of furniture or a rustic, worn or antique look.

The paint has a matte, velvety effect on walls indoors. Arte di Vita chalk based paint can be applied directly to walls with 1 or more coats of paint or wallpaper. The coverage is excellent, the paint has a pleasant lemony scent and can be cleaned when dried. The chalk based paint is available in 45 inimitable colours. Make sure that the wall you are going to paint is free from grease, dirt and dust. Repair any damages and make sure there are no loose wallpaper edges. Stir the paint thoroughly. Apply the paint undiluted with a brush or roller. Always use the wet-on-wet painting technique, also in the corner from wall to ceiling. Use a brush for the upper edge and use a small roller for the first part. The rest of the wall can be painted with a larger roller. When the first coat is dry (1-3 hours), it’s possible to apply a second coat, but usually one coat will suffice. Clean painting equipment immediately with water. The paint has an 8 to 10 m2 yield, depending on the surface.

‘Prutje’ is a completely natural beeswax remover, easy to apply. Just apply a thick layer with a flat brush, let it be absorbed for 24 hours and wash with warm water and a brush. Your wooden item of furniture will be completely rid of beeswax, oil and even most stains and is ready immediately for a finish with paint, wax, a wash or varnish. Has the surface been treated with a stain, then it needs to be degreased thoroughly and sanded as deeply as possible or at least until the layer has become completely matte. Clean with thinner. To make sure that any residual oil in the stain won’t work through the paint, it’s advisable to apply a coat of primer before applying the chalk based paint. ‘Prutje’ can also be used to remove most stain residues.

Veneer is a rather smooth surface and is difficult to roughen. We advise sanding the surface lightly and treating it with a proper coat of primer. A surface that has been treated with chalk based paint or (paint) polish, can be degreased and lightly sanded before applying the first coat of paint.

Something that applies to all surfaces: degrease before painting. In case of painting a decorative object, for best results apply two coats of chalk based paint. Don’t dilute it and apply with a brush or roller. Arte di Vita has good flat brushes in several sizes. In case of painting a utensil and to avoid scratches or greasy stains so in order to harden and close up the surface, mix the chalk based paint with 20 to 50 % of Arte di Vita matte varnish. This makes the surface scrub- and scratchproof. We advise a quarter of a litre varnish to 1 litre chalk based paint. The paint’s matte look will be maintained this way. With a 1 to 1 ratio (for very intensive use) the colour will be somewhat darker. In case of a much-used surface like a table top, apply two coats of matte varnish on top of the coat(s) of chalk based paint. This insures a durable scratchproof finish. The matte, powdery chalk finish is lost, though. The original colour will darken a little.

The surface decides what treatment is necessary before painting. Is it covered with beeswax? This has to be removed first. Beeswax protects the wood from within and so the wood is heavily impregnated with it. The paint will usually not cover beeswax very well, and if it does there’s a significant chance that after a while the beeswax will break through and cause stains. Recently, Arte di Vita has discovered a new user-friendly and eco-friendly solution: ‘Prutje’ (Dutch for 'goo')

Arte di Vita lime paint

lime paint on external surfaces

A natural, ecological paint with a traditional character. This mineral paint has a high water vapour permeability. Because of this permeability the paint is very suitable for application in farm houses or old buildings, because it regulates moisture and as a consequence there’s less chance of moulding. Because of the varying levels of pigment absorption, the chalk paint gives a subtle and velvety look. It is advised to apply a special primer for lime paint on the wall. The lime paint is applied wet-on-wet in two layers. Simply start at the edge of the ceiling with a small, flat brush and then with a lime-paintbrush all the way down. The drying time is 1-6 hours, depending on air humidity and temperature. As soon as the first layer is dry, you apply the second layer. Please mind the fact that the lime paint is quite dark during application. The intended colour becomes visible during the drying time. Lime paint also allows good adhesion to non-treated wood or MDF, giving wood an aged and robust character. The mixing of the lime paint is very simple. Add the pigment to 1,8 litres of water and stir. Then add the chalk and mix well. A package with 2,5 litres covers 10 - 15m2.

Lime paint is eco-friendly, traditional and sustainable and is very suitable for the renovation of old buildings. The - unpainted! - surface should be 100% mineral, in order for good adhesion to take place. Mineral surfaces are; concrete, cement, stone and bricks. When mixed, lime paint can be stored and used for a few months. The paint is applied with a lime-paintbrush, which is available in 18cm width for outside walls. Lime paint is always applied in two layers. During application and for at least the next two days, you need dry weather. Be aware that you need to apply the paint wet-on-wet in order to prevent colour differences during the drying process. Avoid unfiltered sunshine on the wall during application, because it may change the colour.

Clean the surface using a high-pressure hose. Wetting the wall before application of the paint gives you more application time. Application in sunlight or on a warm, dry surface could burn the chalk paint, which will result in less adhesion. The drying time per layer is 1-6 hours, depending on air humidity and temperature. When the paint colour has become lighter, the paint is dry but not yet cured. The curing takes place through air. In the carbonation process with CO2 the lime paint eventually petrifies. This process takes 1-3 months. Lime paint is a breathing, moisture regulating and absorbing paint. Because of this, the paint can darken in wet weather and lighten again when the wall dries. This is part of the lively character of lime paint. The wall can be repainted with a single layer after a few years. Direct repainting is only possible with lime paint. The lime paint can be removed using a high-pressure hose.

The 8 'soothing colours' in our chalk paint range are special because they have a soothing, healing effect on people who spend time in rooms decorated with these colours. We also have a few fabrics in these colours, our 'Soothing' range.

natural fabrics

Our fabric collection consists of 100 % linen (including stonewashed linen) and hemp  in colours that match the Arte di Vita paint colours perfectly. We believe that the use of matching colours in an interior decides whether the overall look is harmonious. The fabrics are produced honestly and ecologically in Europe. The collection consists of fabrics suitable for upholstery, curtains and soft furnishings, ranging from light to heavy. The width of the fabrics ranges from 135cm to 320cm. Every fabric has been selected with care and is durable and of high quality.

ecological & sustainable

Why linen & hemp? Read more about the origin and production of our fabrics here!

Linen is antibacterial, non-allergenic, moisture- and heat-regulating meaning that it stays dry longer and feels warm in Winter but cool in Summer. Linen is also extremely durable. It used to be passed down from generation to generation as it only gets better (more flexible and supple) with age. Apart from these advantages, linen is also 100 % ecological. Linen is woven from ‘flax’ which is a 100 % vegetal and vegan fibre that doesn’t require irrigation (rain water is enough!) nor synthetic products such as fertilizers, herbicides or fungicides. One hectare of flax retains 3,7 tons of CO2. Flax respects the environment and preserves the land.
Flax seeds are planted between the 15th of March and the 15th of April and take 100 days to grow to 1 meter at which point the crop flowers (which lasts only a few hours). The crop is not reaped but pulled up and then placed in swathes of cloth. This takes place in July. In August the transformation process from plant to fibre takes place with the help of sun, dew and rain; the fibrous skin is detached from the central wood. The second phase requires mechanical separation, involving a process called ‘scutching’ followed by combing and finally, spinning in order to transform the fibre into yarn. The yarn is then woven or knitted.

About our fabrics

Our fabrics, European linen and hemp, are made by producers in Belgium, France and Spain with respect for the environment. The producers, mostly 4th generational family owned weaving mills, are recognized by the ‘Masters of Linen’.

Why choose Linen?

Why choose hemp?

Hemp is a biodegradable plant that doesn’t require irrigation or phytosanitary treatments. It’s organically sourced, renewable and zero-waste (all by-products can be used). It has invaluable natural qualities; heat-regulating, anti-bacterial, antifungal and insect repellent. Organic growers love hemp because it leaves a weed-free soil at the end of each season. The tow (external cellulose fibre) is separated from the shive (the central, soft part of the stem) by mechanical defibering, a process that uses little energy and no chemical treatments thanks to high-performance industrial equipment and technical know-how. Hemp is recognized throughout the world for its environmental qualities.
